Product Description
Enter an enchanted realm of ghosts, dark angels and winter magic with a musical ghost story that follows the path of a mysterious knight as he wanders the ruins of a haunted cathedral. The arrangements on this album incorporate acoustic guitars and mandolins to achieve a medieval minstrel sound. Gregorian choirs compliment the moody blend of original instrumentals, and guest vocalists perform on gothic renditions of traditional holiday carols. Winter’s Knight is… More >>

Sorry, I know this is touted as Nox’s Christmas disc but I have to disagree.
This is Pagan/Winter music.
Many of the tracks are very dark and brooding.
I can’t imagine any church where you would hear this kind of holiday music.
That said,
The music is brilliant.
Like I said, it’s dark and brooding and really captures the heart of winter.
The bleakness, the darkness, and the frigid cold are brought to life through Winter’s Knight.
There are only a few traditional Christmas songs on here but they too are given the Goth treatment, my favorite among the traditional songs being “Carol of the Bells”.
Other stand out tracks for me are, Evening Star, Phantom Tocatta, Hallowed Ruins, Gregorian Hymn, and the title track Winter’s Knight.
Really though, there aren’t any bad songs on the disc.
If you are looking for traditional “mall” Christmas music then look elsewhere.
There are no shortages of generic holiday music, take a trip to the local mall or turn on one of the many stations that play the same old tired hits.
Winter’s Knight does not celebrate this season as Jesus’ B -Day.
Instead, Nox pays tribute to the old ways.
The Yule.
Yes, the Yule.
The ancient pagan holiday that Christianity absorbed and then turned it into one of the biggest money makers of all time.
Prai$e the Lord indeed!
Nox has always been for a certain kind of listener.
No doubt many people will find the music too dark and depressing to play this on Christmas Eve. LOL
I honestly can’t see myself putting up the tree listening to this either.
Not the happiest of music, I truly found myself enjoying this cd the most while sitting on the couch with the lights dimmed, reading a book with a glass of wine.
Or, the first time I listened to it, I was lying on the couch watching the snow flakes fall from the living room window.
Yes, I can see this disc getting played frequently during the coming months.
And being from Minnesota where it can get to minus 30 degrees, this cd will be a pleasure to listen to.
Not a happy go lucky Christmas cd, but a dark, gothic, and beautiful trip through the cold bleakness of winter.

Many other reviewers have stated the music sounds like it came from an old abandoned cathedral.
I can’t help but agree that an ancient, haunted cathedral is probably the only church you’d hear this kind of music.
The snow falls, the wind howls, the fire warms…..so does the wine.
I recommend this disc for intelligent listeners that are looking for something a little different.
Dark, mature and utterly breathtaking, Winter’s Knight comes………
Highly Recommended!!!
Before I start on this beautiful album, I have just one question.
Why, oh why does everyone listen to the overplayed Christmas music that you hear in the shopping malls? There has to be a reason why people would like such a thing. It’s sad to listen to overplayed Christmas music, when you know that there is no substance in any of the songs you hear. Why do people listen to the overplayed Christmas music at the malls, while at the same time, ignoring Nox Arcana’s “Winter’s Knight” album? That is a veryy sad world we live in.
This album by Nox Arcana is the most beautiful Christmas album I’ve ever heard. When I hear this, the music shows me how the world would be when we play this wonderful album. We wouldn’t have to deal with overplayed Holiday songs at the mall, and nor would we have to put up with emotionless songs that have no substance when the holidays come around. Reason why? because this music by Nox Arcana has no saccharine lyrics, and no sugary, Pop-flavored singing on it. Every song on this beautiful Cd is packed with emotion. Just sit back, relax, grab a bottle of Sparkling Cider, and listen to this wonderful album with your friends and family around the fire when the Christmas season comes. Highly recommended.
The idea behind this CD and the music itself are a breath of fresh air in the stagnant holiday music scene. Dark and evocative, it pushes aside the sugarplums and saccharine we’re all used to. However, the production leaves quite a bit to be desired. It’s all done with computers – the choral parts are lacking in fullness, I can’t always tell what the stringed “instruments” are supposed to be, and rather than cadences that would give finality to the piece, the tracks often come to a sudden stop. 3 1/2 stars.
Bought this based on the great reviews since there were no preveiws available to hear. Cool beginning and the last several selections are very good. As expected, the tone is nicely dark, forboding, and somber. The middle, however, is filled with quite a few underimaginative, underproduced, repetitive instrumental songs – how many augmented fourths can you play before it all sounds the same? I understand Nox Arcana is going for the “diabolus in musica” but after a while it just becomes tedious. They use a lot of chimes and computerized vox humana on this cd.
Good quality sound and music. Excellent vocals & instramentation. This CD is probably good for Christmas time if you want something that you can’t dance, skip, or whistle to. The included time honored church Christmas songs are very well done. Very well composed and produced music.
Unfortunately, Winter’s Knight definately does not have a dark sound to it. It is not scary. It will not raise the hair on the back of your neck. The ‘theme’ from begining to end sounds constant & similar. This does make for a good quality when you want consistancy of mood, tone & timber, but by the second listening, I was bored.
Winters Knight was not what I was expecting or hoping for when I previewed the other Nox Arcana’s music on Amazon… Sadly, Winter’s Knight does not have any music previews for any of its songs. If there were listening previews for Winters Knight, I probably would have purchased a different Nox Arcana CD.
This CD just doesn’t have the darkness or spooky / scary factor that Midnight Syndicate has… I haven’t purchased the other Nox Arcana CD’s yet, but maybe after previewing those again, I might find the sound that I was hoping for from Nox Arcana on Winters Knight.
